HEERE LIES : THE
BODY OF JAMES KE
LLY . OF MEKNIE
WHO . DIED THE XI
- FEB: 1648
This grave-slab dates to the seventeenth century but was reused in the nineteenth century as can be seen from the secondary inscription and the empty socket cut into the original cross for a lost Agnus Dei motif. The cross is carved in false relief and exhibits pointed terminals with steps. and a form of Calvary base. The 1648 date is just pre-Cromwellian. This slab is mounted on the western choir wall of Clontuskert Augustinian priory near Ballinasloe. It is one of a number of seventeenth-century grave-slabs on the site.
