Mason marks were used by individual stonemasons to mark their work for payment purposes. They consist of various motifs and designs – generally very simple that could be cut with a chisel or punch. They are usually found on dressed masonry blocks and can be incised or carved in relief. A large collection can be seen in Kilconnell Franciscan friary on the piers of the cloister arcade and on the columns of the aisle and transepts. A number of individual masons can be identified by the different types of marks. Where encountered they should be noted and photographed.
