Betagh fireplace lintel

Lintel from Betagh towerhouse near Ballygar.

Inscribed chimney overmantle.
Christy Cunniffe

This rare surviving lintel or overmantle from over a large fireplace comes from a now demolished towerhouse near Newbridge, Ballygar. It bears an English inscription carved in false relief that reads: Richard Bytagh and Sarah Flahertie  his wife erec/(ted) (t)ower and bawne ano domini 164?. It also bears a sacred IHS monogram with a small cross springing from the cross-bar of the H.

It was brought to my attention by Brendan Donnelan, Killure.
