Claregalway graveslab

Graveslab in the grounds of Claregalway Franciscan Abbey
Christy Cunniffe

This tapered medieval graveslab at Claregalway Franciscan friary appears to be of late 13th- or early 14th-century date and is probably contemporary with the erection of the friary by John de Cogan in 1290. It is missing its upper section so we are no knowledge of the form of the cross head. It has a cross shaft carved in relief along its centre line with an ornate floriated lower terminal. There is no apparent evidence of an inscription.
