Galway County Council procured the services of 7L Architects to manage conservation works at Temple Jarlath. Works were carried out under Ministerial Consent and involved the removal and treatment of overgrowth.

Conservation Management Plan

Conservation and Management  was prepared in 2023, through the Community Monuments Fund, National Monuments Service, Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. This multi-discipline document identified the condition of the church at Temple Jarlath as being at risk. This document informs all stakeholders of the condition and significance of a monument.

Safety and Stability

With support from the Community Monuments Fund 2024 works significantly improved safety and stability and the ongoing conservation of the built and archaeological heritage at Temple Jarlath. Vegetation treatment and clearance was a protracted process given its mass and the extent that it had penetrated the walls and displaced stonework. Works focussed on the wall tops of the church and mortuary chapel and the walls of the east end of the medieval church. Areas only accessible from scaffold to the mortuary chapel were conserved.

Skilled Craftmanship

This work is highly skilled and sensitive. Romanesque carvings surrounding the windows had to be carefully worked around. Joints around the decorated sandstone were raked out, pinned and pointed using NHL2 lime and sand mortar. Repairs were carried out using lime mortars and specialist masonry repair techniques by Galway Stone Design. Work was monitored by Dominic Delany, Consultant Archaeologist and 7L Architects under Ministerial Consent.
