Wayside monument
Inishmore has a very unique series of elaborate wayside memorials erected to the memory of ordinary islanders. They were built during the 20th century. All the inscriptions on these monuments are in English. For further information on these monuments it essential to read Tim Robinson 1991 Mementos of Mortality. Folding Landscapes. It is treasure trove of information. Similar monuments to these on Inishmore can be found in East Galway, though they are mainly of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century date.
