The 2022 Excellence in Local Government Awards, sponsored by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage are held to recognise and celebrate the outstanding work being carried out by Local Authorities all over Ireland.
Galway County Council had been shortlisted in the nineteenth annual Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards 2022 for the following projects:
Galway Community Archaeology Project in Heritage and Built Environment Category
and
Severe Weather Event Management System in Local Authority Innovation Category
The nomination is recognition of just some for the great work that has been carried out over the years by Marie Mannion, Heritage Officer and Dr. Christy Cunniffe, the first Field Monuments Advisor for the county.
The Heritage Officer, Marie Mannion is delighted with Galway County Council reaching the shortlist in the Heritage and Built Environment Section for Galway Community Archaeology Project.
Heritage Hero
Dr Christy Cunniffe was awarded the accolade ‘Heritage Hero’ in 2021 by The Heritage Council. He stated ‘It is great to see that community archaeology projects are now replicated in other counties throughout the country. It is recognised that supporting our communities is integral in maintaining and promoting our archaeological heritage’.
Without Marie’s vision and Christy’s enthusiasm this innovative project would not have become the success it is today. It is a privilege to follow in Christy’s big boots and work with Marie and her team in The Heritage Office, Galway County Council. While we were not winners on the night (Congratulations Donegal County Council), it was a great to have our work acknowledged and recognised on a National Level.
Galway Community Archaeology Project is funded by The Heritage Council & Galway County Council.
