Seefin Souterrain
Seefin Archaeological Society were successful in their application to fund immediate works to help in stabilising Seefin Souterrain. Kinvara Konsult Structural Engineering, Martin Fitzpatrick, Thrutime, and Mathieu & Mitchell were deployed to devise a plan in preparation of proposed works to prevent further deterioration of the monument. Seefin Souterrain is a Recorded Monument (GA104:269001) and is located on private land.
Souterrain
A souterrain is an underground passage, used for storage or as a place of refuge. They are commonly associated with ringforts and can date from the early Medieval Period, or The Iron Age. The souterrain at Seefin is associated with an enclosure at the same location. The underground passage is lined with stone. A lintel at the entrance of one of the chambers is significantly cracked, hence the requirement for intervention to assist with it preservation.
Drone footage
Drone footage was captured by Munster Drone Services. This was the only way to safely get information from inside the souterrain to inform a Method Statement and prepare a Scope of Works for this monument. Safety training and First Aid was held for all personnel associated with the project. It is hoped to carry out conservation works on the cracked lintel and supporting wall in 2025.
The souterrain is located on private land and Seefin Archaeolgical Society are extremely grateful to the landowner for allowing access for works to proceed. The souterrain is unsafe to enter.
