Transitional style capital
Christy Cunniffe

This capital on the south doorway of Poolboy chapel in Ballinasloe dates to the thirteenth century. Artistically it fits into what is referred to as the Transitional style. The chapel was manned by the Canons Regular from Clontuskert. It consists of a single chamber church with a base batter externally. A small aumbry for storing the sacred vessels occurs in the east end of the south wall. One single headstone and rows of stone markers indicate children’s burial inside.
