Drumatober Well

St Brendan's Well

Christy Cunniffe

Quartz pebble, often found at holy wells
Dr. Christy Cunniffe

Drumatober holy well is located in the parish of Mullagh. It is associated with St Brendan founder and patron of Clonfert. The well consists of a dry-stone circular well of c.1metre in depth. The well is dry and as is common to wells in this situation the water has migrated to the bowl of large ash tree overhanging the original well. The new well is accessed by climbing up on the base of the tree.  A small crucifix has been nailed to the side of tree. Inspection of the original well revealed some quartz pebbles, some small white stones and a broken figurine of the Madonna and child Jesus. A children’s burial ground is also, present at the site. This is marked by a small grove of whitethorn trees.
