Kilcreevanty Graveyard Committee and Galway County Council procured the services of Aegis Archaeology to prepare a Conservation Management Plan for Kilcreevanty, Recorded Monument GA029-096001- (Religious house–Benedictine nuns), Co. Galway. This is a national monument in the ownership of the Local Authority. The site is surrounded by private farm land.

Community Monuments Fund

Funding was received through the Community Monuments Fund 2023 and is administered through Galway County Council on behalf of the National Monuments Service, Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. This is one of eight projects in the county which received Community Monuments funding 2023. Thanks to a dedicated community group and understanding landowner access to the site was arranged to enable the plan be carried out during the Autumn of 2023.

Multi-Discipline Team

A multi-disciplinary team included a conservation architect, structural engineer, archaeologists and an ecologist. Clearance of vegetation was carried out under Ministerial Consent. This enabled the assessment of the upstanding remains of the nunnery. A measured Building Survey, Photogrammetry & Laser Scanning as well as aerial photographs and a photographic survey of the ruins was carried out which provides a concise and accurate record for the site 2023.

Conservation Management Plan

The Conservation Management Plan shall enable the community and all stakeholders to manage the future preservation and promotion of this national monument. Please note the plan is subject to change, It was prepared by Aegis Archaeology and is available to consult below.  Due to compression some images are pixelated and distorted.
