Heraldic shield Athenry
Christy Cunniffe

This small section of a heraldic shield survives in the plasterwork of a recess in the south wall of the nave at Athenry Friary. It, along with some Gothic lettering are all that survives of a likely former Coat of Arms incised into wet plaster as a bas for a painted scene. It is in a poor state of preservation and its long-term conservation is a must.
